During the Vaudeville era the phrase, "but will it play in Peoria" was created.  The phrase subsequently was adopted by politicians, pollsters and promoters to question the potential mainstream acceptance of anything new.

But we don't need to ask if this will "play in Peoria" (well at least East Peoria)
