Nellie M. Leas
NEW MADISON - Nellie M. (Spencer) Leas, 87, formerly of 5601 Sebring Warner Road, Granville, and of 1376 Downing Road, New Madison, passed away at her home in New Madison following a brief illness on Monday, Sept. 24, 2007.
She was born Nov. 22, 1919, in Darke County to Melvin "Pierce" and Maude M. (Dill) Spencer. She worked as a farm wife as well as in the bakery of Eikenberry's Grocery until retiring in 1999. Her delight was in embroidery - making pillow slip sets for grandchildren and quilts for the precious great-grands. She will be remembered by many for homemade noodles and angel food cakes as well as her ready smile.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Janet M. Watson of Mount Vernon, Ron and Lois (Gower) Leas of Mount Vernon and Judy and Russell Bennett of New Madison; her grandchildren, Steve Watson, Bryan Watson, Tonia Boudinot, Todd Leas, Tiffany Korns, Russell "Bud" Bennett Jr., Dr. Jodi McCartney and Michael Bennett; 12 great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-granddaughter; sister, Perdita Baird of Fruitland, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Melvin "Bud" and Helen Spencer of Greenville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forest F. Leas, on April 9, 1977, in a farm tractor accident. They were married Aug. 7, 1937.
She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 131 E. Fourth St., Greenville, where services will be Thursday, Sept. 27, at 10:30 a.m., with Pastor Peter Menke officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Cemetery. The family will receive visitor on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville.
