Census, 1850, Athens Co, Ohio. Benjamin and Martha were both 78 years old and living alone at the time of the 1850 Census.

Misc. According to "Gudgeons in America" Benjamin and Martha were both born in Maryland in 1772. He was the son of Wm. Gudgeon II, who married Mary Snow in Baltimore, MD on March 17, 1760. No marriage record was located for Benjamin and Martha. They are believed to have married in Frederick Co, MD or in Augusta Co, Virginia on the west side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was listed in the "Records of Augusta County, VA (1745-1800) as an inhabitant of the North side of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in a Prayer for a survey for a road. This was northeast of Staunton, West Virginia and would have been their first home. No Land Patent or Deed was found in this area for them.

They are believed to have next traveled across the Shenandoah and Allegheny Mountains to the West Fork of the Monongahela River and up through Morgantown, West Virginia to Pennsylvania around 1796. The Monongahela River was a well-traveled waterway at that time.

The first record we have of them as a family was in 1800. The were living in German twp, Fayette Co, Pennsylvania. This county was formed from Westmorland County about 1783. By 1810 they were living in Manellen Township, same county.

The first child of record we found was Malinda, born in Pennsylvania in 1797. The first nine children were born in PA and the rest in Ohio.

Land Patent for SE Qtr of Sec. 4, Twp 11 (Freeport), Range 7 (Steubenville): Land Patent for SE Qtr of Sec. 4, Twp 11 (Freeport), Range 7 (Steubenville), 8 Oct 1818, Harrison County, Ohio, USA. This piece of land was a quarter section of 160 acres. Harrison County was formed in January 1814; it is not known when they first occupied this land but it is known that their son, Stephen B. Gudgeon was born there April 15, 1815 and was the first of their children to be born in Ohio.

Alexander sold this land to Daniel Grewell and Isaac Whealden on Sept. 6, 1833 by Sheriff's Sale. Benjamin bought this property back from them on August 23, 1834 and resold it to Isaac Holloway on June 27, 1836.

Benjamin Gudgeon purchased 106 acres from Moses Hanning.: Benjamin Gudgeon purchased 106 acres from Moses Hanning, Dec 1833, Athens Co, Ohio. He, in turn sold this land to his son Alexander Gudgeon in April 1835.

Benjamin Gudgen purchased 90 acres of land from George Spurgen.: Benjamin Gudgen purchased 90 acres of land from George Spurgen, 26 Jan 1835, Alexander Twp, Athens Co, Ohio. This was described in Athens County, Ohio Land Record Books 1848-1866 as "90 acres of land off the south end of the NE corner of Lot 4, and was part of a 140 acre being the west part of Lot 1 situated in Section 26 of the 8th Township, Range 14, originally entered in the name of Eseriah Wheeler.

Tax List, 1826, Harrison County, Ohio, USA. A tax record for Benjamin Gudgen for 1826 for Chattle Property was found; it shows him paying seventy one cents tax on two horses valued at eighty dollard and three cattle valued at twenty-four dollars.
