Pat grew up in Higginsville, Lafayette County, Missouri and was educated in pre-law at Warrensburg College in Warrensburg, Missouri, and later law school at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. He was a son of James Leonard and Sophia Leas McGinness of Higginsville. In his days back in Missouri, he was known to his family as Wilbur.
He was married at least three times, had two children, one by the second and third marriage. He first married the former Betty Lou Wilson of Harrisonville, Cass County, Missouri, followed by Gladys M. Alexander, of Darlington County, South Carolina, then Virginia "Ginny" Woodard of Charlotte, Dickson County, Tennessee. Beginning with his oldest, he and Gladys' son is Patrick Val'ere "Val" McGinness of Columbus, Georgia, and his son with Virginia is James Claybourne "Clay" McGinness of Nashville. Virginia is not listed on this memorial as a wife because she was not buried, but cremated, and I don't have information on the whereabouts of Betty Lou.
Pat was Master Mason back in Missouri, and an active Boy Scouts of America adult leader in Nashville.
Mr. McGinness was a Corporal in Army intelligence during World War II in Europe, and fought in five major battles during that time, notably at Normandy and was decorated for his service.
As a note, several internet accounts of Pat's death state that he died in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, loosely taken from the Social Security Death Index notation. He did not die there. It was the last known address for delivery of his monthly payments, not his death location. He passed away in Murphreesboro, TN at the V.A. Hospital. I know this because I'm his son, and the one who got the call when he died there.
