Jim was the elder son of James Leonard "Leonard" and Sophia "Sophie" Leas McGinness of Higginsville, Lafayette County, Missouri. He and wife Velma never had children, yet raised a daughter from Velma's first marriage to J.P. McCormick, Jean. Jean and her husband are deceased, and are buried in St. Charles, St. Charles, Missouri.
Jim and Velma resided in Lexington, Lafayette County, Missouri. Velma apparently went to live with daughter Jean after Jim's passing. He was a Master Mason (Freemason), and was a member of the V.F.W. (Veterans of Foreign Wars).
