Jacob 3 Warden, son of William 2 ( William Wallace 1 ) and Sarah (Christman) Warden, born 8 May, 1788, was a merchant and business man and, with his brother Benjamin, founded and laid out the town of Wardensville, Hardy County, W. Va. He was the possessor of considerable land in West Virginia and in Ohio. He had two stores, one at Wardens- ville the other at Staunton, Va. He was married 8 Feb., 1816, at Staunton, Va. , by Rev. Wm. Calhoon, to Mary Leas, the daughter of Jacob Leas a well-to-do planter near Staunton, Va. ( Mr. Leas was a native of Pennsylvania, born 28 May, 1765, died 14 May, 1843. He had resided in Virginia for 53 years, respected b r all who knew him. He was a good citizen, long an acting magistrate of the county and was High Sheriff during the last years of his life. He united himself to the Presbyterian church about 1808, and remained an elder of the church to the time of his death. ) Jacob 3 Warden died 14 Jan., 1828, at the early age of 39 years, leaving six children.

Mary (Leas) Warden survived her husband thirty-two years, and upon her fell the duty and responsibility of rearing a large family. Faithfully and well she met this responsibility. She departed this life 8 Sept., i860, aged 66 years, loved by all who knew her. 2
