bullet  General Notes:

Notes for George Miller:

The first of our Miller family in this country was George Miller, born in Bayern, Germany on 5th of May, 1751. He married Catherine Weir, also of Germany, in 1777. Following their marriage they came to this country, landing at Philadelphia. George was an indentured servant, which means he agreed to work for a certain number of years in order to pay for their passage across the ocean.
Immediately upon landing in this country he enlisted as a Revolutionary soldier. He had taken up his home at Germantown, near Philadelphia, and enlisted in September, 1777, and served four months as a private in a company commanded by Captain Jacob Bishop. He afterwards removed to Maryland, near Hagerstown, which was a German settlement. In 1778 he re-enlisted from that place, in a company commanded by Edward Solomon, and served two months. Again in 1781 he enlisted for two months at Hagaerstown, in the company commanded by Captain William Miller. This military information is obtained from the records of the pension office at Washington, which also shows that on June 10, 1833, he was allowed a pension for service in the army.
The next information we have of George Miller is from Green County, Pennsylvania. In 1806 he obtained a patent for a tract of land on Whitely Creek, which is called in the patent "falsehood."
This tract of land can still be identified, and is known as "The Miller Ranch." He sold this tract out in Small pieces, and in 1830, conveyed away the rest of it and moves over onto Rudolph run, in Green county, where he purchased a tract of 219 acres, for which he paid $700.00.
George Miller died Septemb 4, 1839. His will was admitted to record at Waynesburg on November 30 of that year. The following is an extract from his will:
In the name of God, Amen. I, George Miller, of Whitely Township, Greene County, and State of Pennsylvania, do ordain and make this my last will and testament. I will that my mortal soul return to God who gave it and my body to the dust from whence it came; that my burial be plain and decent, without pomp or pride. Item 1st.
