Daniel served in the Revolutionary War for about five years. He volunteered to serve in the war at age 16 years of age in Granville County North Carolina under Captain Lawson who later became Colonel of a Regiment under General Nathaniel Greene.

He fought in the Battle of Cowpens, 17 January 1781 in South Carolina under the direction of Brigadier General Daniel Morgan. It was a decisive victory by American Revolutionary forces in the Southern campaign of the American Revolutionary War. He also fought in the Battle of Guilford Court House on 15 March 1781 in Greensboro NC under the direction of Major General Nathaniel Greene. The battle is commemorated at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.

He fought in the Battle of Eutaw Springs on 08 September 1781 close to Eutawville South Carolina under Major General Nathaniel Greene. His brother John was killed at the Battle of Eutaw Springs on 08 September 1781.

He entered the service as a private and was promoted to orderly Sergeant and later promoted to Lieutenant.
