He joined a Pennsylvania regiment in the Revolution and served for three years; this was strictly against the tenets of the Quaker religion. He was a private in Captain David McQueen's Company, 3rd BN, Lancaster Militia: Col Lowry was his Commanding Officer.
John married Catharine Leas, daughter of Leonard Leas and Salome, in 1783 in Heidelberg Twp, York Co, Pennsylvania. (Catharine Leas was born on 14 Jul 1761 in York Co, PA and died on 8 Apr 1857.)
