Edwin E. Leas Sr.
Edwin E. Leas Sr., 82, formerly of Monroe Central Road, West Manchester, died Friday, Jan. 9, at The Brethren's Home in Greenville.
Born April 18, 1915, in Darke County, he was the son of the late Richard Hayes and Rosa Mae (Noggle) Leas. He retired in 1981 after 24 years as custodian at the C.R. Coblentz School District. He was previously employed by International Harvester for 25 years until the plant moved from Richmond, Ind., in the 1950s.
Mr. Leas had been a member of Price's Creek Church of the Brethren since 1948, and had held many offices, including deacon, during his membership. He was a member of the Preble County Historical Society; a member of Preble's Little Turtles camping club since 1972, and the club's chaplain from 1972 to 1994. He was also a member of the Slowdowners Camping Club; and a member of the Darke County Ostomy Club.
He served as a 4-H leader for 10 years; was a member of the Senior Citizens' Participants Council for 10 years; Triple L Senior Citizens Club; Preble County Coalition for the Elderly; and Farm Bureau Council #3.
In 1984, he and his wife were chosen Outstanding Seniors of the Year, and the same year, he was also the Senior Citizens' Pork Festival King.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo (Shelley) Leas, whom he married June 27, 1936; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Bill Jones of New Paris, Joellen and Lou Driggs of Eaton; one son and daughter-in-law, Edwin Jr. and Fanny Leas of Eaton; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Verna Leas of Richmond, Ind.; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Roy Leas, Guy Leas, Herman Leas, Richard Leas and Eugene Leas; and two sisters, Wealtha Marker and Kathryn Miller.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Michael Chapel, West Manchester, with the Rev. David D. Shetler officiating. Burial was in Monroe Cemetery, Eldorado.
