At age 5 1/2, Elmer's parents both died, leaving him an orphan. He moved to St. Joseph, IL area and lived with his three uncles, Abner, Isaac and William Leas until college age. The day he graduated from Chrisitan Church College at Merom, IN, he married Hulda Wildman. Hulda had also been left an orphan & put herself through college by giving music lesson
They reared their four children in the old Leas family homestead at Stone Bluff.
