The Greensburg Daily News released the Top Ten Sports Stories of 2008 and I came in at Number Eight:

The Year in Review

Gary Dudgeon, Greensburg Daily News

"Coming in at number eight was the one-two punch that the Lady Pirates’ track team had in the discus and shot put. Senior Mollye Leas and junior Erica Schwering gave Greensburg what amounted to a 36-point head start on its dual meet opponents as the two girls normally placed 1-2 in the throws."

"Their ride continued until Semi-State where Schwering was the final state qualifier in the shot put and Leas was first alternate in the discus. When a slot opened up, she joined Schwering and Coach Dave Jackson at the state finals in Bloomington."

story:

Mollye Leas gets an invite to state

Story and photo by Gary Dudgeon, Greensburg Daily News

When the Indiana High School Athletic Association failed to fill its allocation for state qualifiers Tuesday night, Mollye Leas got a call back to fill the 27th and final slot in the state meet to start May 30.

The field of competitors at the state competition must consist of 27 throwers. There are eight regionals and the top three of each regional qualify for state. This equals 24 participants. The girl who finished in fourth position at the Shelbyville Regional threw farther than the "State Standard" of 127' 9" so she received an automatic position at state. That filled 25 slots.

The IHSAA then looked at the next highest throw and that was 120'10" by a girl from North Judson High School. She filled the 26th position.

Mollye threw 120’9” giving her the 27th slot.

Mollye Leas is preparing to unleash her final throw in the discus toss. Her throw was good for
120’ 9” and was named the 27th qualifier in the state finals.

May 21, 2008 -
Thanks for the sign, Dad.  It looks strangely familiar

May 21, 2008 - Correction!
.  As a result of the "call back", I am going to State in the Discus!!

April 26, 2008 -
Today was the Greensburg Invitational featuring Greenfield, Greensburg, Oldenburg, Pendleton Heights, Plainfield, Shelbyville and Zionsville.

I finished third in the shot put with a throw of 34' 10".  I finished second in the discus with 116' 9 1/2".  This throw was my new second best throw.  Click HERE for a video of me throwing the discus at this meet.

April 24, 2008 -
Tonight our meet was at East Central High School.  I finished in 2nd place in both the shot put and the discus and Erica finished in 3rd place in both events.

In the discus I had my best throws since the Decatur Central meet.  All of my throws were over 100' with my farthest throws reaching 109' 1", 110' 6" and 114' 3".  The winner in the discus, from Centerville, threw an amazing 138' 3".  She is the 3rd best thrower in the state.

April 21, 2008 -
Our meet today was at Jac-Cen-Del High School.  The Greensburg girl throwers finished in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in both the Shot Put and the Discus.

Both the girl's and the boy's teams were victorious over the JCD Eagles.

Listed below is the Greensburg Daily News story about this track meet:

April 17, 2008 -
Today was an away meet at Shelbyville.  Both the girl's and the boy's teams beat the host Golden Bears.

The Greensburg girls finished 1st and 2nd in the Shot Put and we finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Discus.

April 15, 2008 -
Today was the Lawrenceburg Relays.  Like the Crossbones, we threw in two person teams.  For Greensburg, in both the Shot Put and the Discus, the team consisted of me and Erica Schwering.

We placed 1st in both events.
Our combined distance in the shot put was 70' and our combined distance in the discus was 191' 3".  Nothing to write home about, but enough to win.

April 13, 2008 -
My last club volleyball tournament was today.  Instead of playing on my own team, I was asked to play on the SEIVB 18-1 team.  The tournament was held at Anderson University.  Our team won every game we played until the championship match when we faced a very tough Decatur Force team.  We finished the day in 2nd place.

I would like to wish my teammates on both teams my best wishes for the future.  We had fun, didn't we.

Tonight I competed at the Decatur Central Twilight Invitational in Indianapolis.  The high schools competing were:

Decatur Central, Avon, Brownsburg, Franklin, Greenfield and Greensburg

In the shot put competition there were three flights and in each flight there were 6 girls.  Each girl got to throw 4 times.  At the end of the competition, I finished in 2nd place.  The girl who beat me was the fourth best thrower in the state in last year's state finals.  I was happy with my results.

In the discus I was in the last flight.  The best distance thrown in the first two flights was around 110'.  The farthest that I had ever thrown in any competition was, 108' 11".  It was not looking so good, but on my first throw, I threw 123' 7 1/2".  This was 15 feet more than my previous PR!  On my next throw I threw around 116' and on my third throw I threw 118'.  On my final throw I once again threw around 123'.  I finished in FIRST PLACE and I have a new PR in the discus of 123' 7 1/2"!!  What a fantastic night!!!

Listed below are the comments from the April 14, 2008 Greensburg Daily News:

Girls finish second at Decatur Central Invitational track meet

Staff report

Invitation track meet held on Friday.

The Pirates finished with 105 points while Brownsburg scored 126 points in the competition held on a cold and windy evening.

Leading the way for the Pirates were Mollye Leas and Erica Schwering in the throws and the tandem of Taryn
Owens in the hurdles and the 200-meter dash. Hannah Doerflinger combined with Owens for a one-two finish
in the 100-meter hurdles.

In winning the discus, Mollye Leas bettered her previous best heave in the event by 16 feet with a throw of
123 feet, 71/2 inches.

Track and Field meet against Jennings County and South Dearborn at South DearbornI finished 2nd in the shot put and 1st in the discus.  The three Greensburg girls swept both events with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

Listed below are the comments from the April 9, 2008 Greensburg Daily News:

The Greensburg Pirates track teams traveled to Aurora to compete in a triangular meet involving Jennings County and the host South Dearborn Knights and came home with the best of results.

The girls team came out on top with 72 points to outdistance the Panthers who scored 65 points and the Lady Knights who picked up 30 points.

The boys closest competition was the host Knights who finished five points behind the Pirates while Jennings County trailed with 14 points.

Fueling the victory was a near sweep of the field events as Jordan Moore, Ethan Herbert and George Myers placed 1-2-3 in the shot put and the Pirates sweep every place from second to seventh in the pole vault. In addition, Myers took first in the discus, Matt Little, Cory Koors and DJ Wright went 1-2-3 in the high jump and Jacob Slusher finished second in the long jump.

The Lady Pirates got a strong effort from sprinter Hannah Doerflinger who swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes, Veronica Tuley who won the 3200 and finished second in the 1600 and from the hurlers who went 1-2-3 in both the shot and discus.

Mollye Leas won the discus and Erica Schwering the shot with the other hurler second in each event. Sabrina Smiley placed third in both events.

A full listing of all results will appear in Thursday’s paper.

April 5, 2008 -
Today was the Cross Bones Carnival Relays at Greensburg Community High School consisting of the following teams:

Columbus North, Connersville, East Central, Greensburg, Madison, Oldenburg, Pendleton Heights and South Decatur

In the shot put, my distance of 37' 0" (a new PR for me)  was added to Erica Schwering's best distance of 35' 6 1/2" for a combined score of 72' 6 1/2".  This combined score not only put us in first place, but it beat the previous Cross Bones record of 67' 10".  This previous record was set by me and Maria Weigel.

In the discus, my best distance was 103' 1".  Erica's best distance was 94' 6 1/2".  This combined score was not a new record, but it was enough to earn a first place in the competition.  Greensburg's "B Team" finished in third place in the discus.  The Cross Bones record for the discus is 207' 10".  This record was set by me and Maria Weigel in 2006.

The Greensburg Daily News reported:

Participants from eight different schools descended on Shriver Field Saturday to participate in the Greensburg Invitational - Cross Bones Relays - which the school hosted for the fifth consecutive year.

The track and field athletes appeared to enjoy the heat of the sun as numerous meet event records were established. Most of the teams were finally able to actually work under conditions other than the dark, cold and damp days Mother Nature has provided lately.

The Lady Pirates started strong with the duo of Mollye Leas and Erica Schwering capturing first in both the discus and the shot put with a new meet record in the shot. The team of Sabrina Smiley and Heather Dance finished third in the discus.

Discus: Greensburg A 197' 7 1/2”, Columbus North A, Greensburg B, Columbus North B, Madison, South Decatur;

Shot Put: Greensburg A 72’ 6 1/2”, East Central A, Columbus North A, Columbus North B, Greensburg B, Connersville;

Another good day!

April 3, 2008
- Today was the first outdoor track and field meet of the season.  This was a 3-way meet between Batesville, East Central and Greensburg.  The temperature was around 50° and it was raining.  The throwing rings were wet and a little slippery so my distances were not as good as I hoped, but I still threw far enough to earn 1st place in both the shot put and the discus.

I threw 35' 3" in the shot and 101' 2" in the discus.  Greensburg won first and second place in the shot (Leas and Schwering) and 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the discus (Leas, Smiley and Schwering).

The Greensburg Daily News, in their April 4th edition reported this:

“Overall, despite the conditions, I thought the kids threw pretty well especially when you consider the conditions. Mollye Leas won both the discus and the shot, and I was pleased with the performance of Samantha (newspaper error: this should actually say, Sabrina) Smiley in her first time out. She took second in the discus and fourth in the shot,” said assistant coach Dave Jackson. “Erica (Schwering) took second in the shot and third in the discus.”

Shot Put: Leas (G) 35’3”, Schwering (G), Bonomini (EC), Smiley (G).

Discus: Leas (G) 101’2”, Smiley (G), Schwering (G), Roell (EC).
