bullet  General Notes:

Bertha of Burgundy (964 \endash 16 January 1010) was the daughter of Conrad the Peaceful, King of Burgundy[1] and his wife Matilda, daughter of Louis IV, King of France and Gerberga of Saxony. She was named for her father's mother, Bertha of Swabia.

She first married Odo I, Count of Blois in about 983.[2] They had several children, including Odo II.[1]

After the death of her husband in 996, Bertha's second cousin Robert, the heir to the throne of France, wished to marry her, in place of his divorced first wife Rozala, who was many years his senior. The union was opposed by his father, Hugh Capet, King of France, due to the political problem that could be caused by religious authorities due to their consanguinity. However, the marriage went ahead around the time of Hugh's death in October 996, which left Robert as king. Pope Gregory V and his successor Sylvester II pronounced anathemas against Robert for his "incestuous" marriage and the pair were forced to separate, but Robert several times attempted to rejoin her.[3]

Bertha married Odo "Eudes" I, Count of Blois, Chartres, Reims, Provins, Châteaudun, and Omois, son of Theobald I, Count of Blois, Chartres, Tours, and Châteaudun and Luitgarde of Vermandois, about 983. (Odo "Eudes" I, Count of Blois, Chartres, Reims, Provins, Châteaudun, and Omois was born about 950 and died on 12 Mar 996 in Tours, Indre et Loire, Centre, France.)
