William Hayden Leas, son of Finly and Martha McCurdy Leas, was born at Tunnel Hill, Coshocton County, Ohio. He graduated from West Bedford High School, Coshocton County, Ohio in 1911. Hayden was class treasurer.

The Class of 1911 was made up of seven members. At his commencement exercises, Hayden delivered an oration entitled "The Present Age" which outlined the opportunities before young men and women. It was noted that his preparation and presentation of the topic showcased his knowledge of current issues.

Hayden married Ethel Alice Morton on December 29, 1915, while they were on Christmas break from their teaching positions. Hayden taught at Brush College in Tunnel Hill and Ethel taught in the Mohawk Schools. The newlyweds honeymooned in Akron, Ohio

Hayden and Ethel had three children: Paul Edmond Leas, Helen Maxine Leas Thoricht and Robert Morton Leas.

Hayden was employed by the B.F. Goodrich Company as a supervisor in the sales and commercial accounting department. He retired in 1959 with 35 years service. Hayden was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed working in his rose garden. He was a member of the Redeemer United Methodist Church. At the time of his death, he had six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. 3
