bullet  General Notes:

The son of Frederick Emanuel & Juliana (Feiser) Ziegler, he married Sarah Ann Culp October 4, 1832, in Adams County and fathered Eliza Jane (b. 12/26/34 - married Michael Murray Miller), Henry D. (b. @1838), Anna (b. @1842), Ellen M. (b. @1844), Emanuel Mathias (b. 09/24/46), Thomas Wallace (b. 03/24/49 - 101st Pa), Charles William (b. 01/18/52), and Sallie Emma (b. 05/17/56 - married Harry J. Rupp). In 1860, he was a merchant living in Gettysburg and stood 5' 8" tall with gray hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Adams County October 16, 1862, as a substitute. Although no record emerged to indicate he was a substitute, he was six years too old for conscription. Moreover, he apparently lied about his age, something necessary only for an overage recruit. He mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 14 as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg.

One online family tree claims his name was "Ruthrauff Emanuel Zeigler [sic]," but Ruthrauff was the name of the minister who married him. Another tree says he was named "Frederick Emanuel Ziegler."
