Married Sarah Elizabeth Chasey 6 December 1855. Richland County, Ohio.

Richard and his wife Sarah provide a significant illustration of family history and the migration of allied families. Relatives quite often moved together from place to place, often for mutual support and help. It is enlightening to look around the neighborhood on census reports as one often finds related kin.

In 1850 the Shade and Chasey families had adjoining farms in Vernon Township, Crawford County, Ohio. Richard and Sarah knew each other as neighbors. Both families moved to Indiana by 1860, Richard's to Salem Twp., Steuben County and Sarah's to nearby DeKalb Twp, in DeKalb County. In 1860, Richard and Sarah's household included not only his widowed mother, but also Sarah's brother Joseph and Richard's future brother-in-law, John R. Kimmel whose sister Anna married Richard's brother David.

Richard and Sarah were farmers in Salem Township, Steuben County, through their adult years. After Richard's death in 1879, Sarah, remained on the farm, operating it until her death in 1904.
