Owens wins title at invite

The Greensburg Pirate track teams traveled to the Decatur Central Twilight Invitational. The Lady Pirates placed fourth in a field of six scoring 72 points.

Greensburg was led by sophomore Taryn Owens. She had the lone win of the meet for the Pirates as she placed first in the 100 hurdles with a time of :16.7. Owens then came back to earn third in the 300 hurdles in :53.1.

All of the Lady Pirate relay teams scored in the meet.

The 3200 team of Owens, Ann Weigel, Val Hagerty and Veronica Tuley (11:01) and the 800 team composed of Jasmine Littrell, Tara Ramer, Brianna Parsons and Ann Weigel (2:07) both place fourth.

The 400 relay team (Hannah Houk, Casey Nelson, Sabrina Smiley and Katie Burns) and the 1600 relay team (Shelbi Reed, Weigel, Parsons and Owens) were both fifth.

Other Pirate harriers who scored included Veronica Tuley sixth in the 1600 (5:53) and Brianna Parsons fifth in the 800 (2:40).

The Lady Pirates also had a strong showing in the field as three individuals scored in the discus and high jump. Erica Schwering was third in both of the throws while teammates Sabrina Smiley and Mollye Leas also scored. Tawna Chauncy tied for second in the high jump with a jump of 4-10 as Casey Nelson (4-8) and Jasmine Littrell (4-6) taking fifth and sixth respectively.

The Pirates were led by Landon Wenning’s third place finish in the 800. His time of 2:01.5 moved him to ninth all-time at Greensburg.

Freshmen Andrew Dougan and Zack Powell added some points on the track as well—with Dougan in sixth place in the 110 high hurdles and Powell sixth in the 1600. Dougan had his best time of the year in :18.1 while Powell also set a personal best finishing in 4:56.

Colt Hyatt and Rick Wininger also set personal bests in the 1600 and 3200 runs while Greg Dougan’s time of :51.8 in the 300 hurdles was the second fastest by a freshman in school history.

The 400 relay team of Craig Schwipps, Matt Novak, Colton Black and Todd Noah and the 1600 team of Wenning, Novak, Powell and Black each placed fifth.

In the field, Greensburg scored with Matt Novak’s sixth place finish in the long jump (18-4).

Jay Myers cleared 9-6 in the pole vault to earn fifth.

Matt Little and Andrew Dougan each scored in the high jump with Little third and Dougan sixth.

The track teams continue the season today at East Central for a 4-team meet with the host Trojans, the Batesville Bulldogs and the Jennings County Panthers.
