Greensburg sweeps Decatur County Meet titles

North Decatur was the site of the Decatur County Track Meet Tuesday, but it was Greensburg taking home the hardware as the Pirates and Lady Pirates swept the team titles on the day.

The Pirates tallied 84 to win the boys title with South Decatur finishing second at 53 and North Decatur third with 19.

The Lady Pirates scored 71 to earn the title with the Lady Chargers finishing at 53 and the Lady Cougars totaling 29.

North’s Hillary Wenning and Hayley Hayden did set two new county meet records.

Wenning set a goal of breaking a 17-year-old record in the 400 and accomplished it with a winning time of :1:01.67. Greensburg’s Shebi Reed finished second in 1:05 with South’s Vanessa Callahan third at 1:09.

Hayden smashed the previous mark in the 100. The old record was :13.2. Hayden won the race Tuesday in :12.78. North’s Wenning was second in :13.15 followed by South Cunningham third in :13.68.

“Overall the girls did well tonight. With our lack of depth, we didn’t think we could get Greensburg. But I was pleased with how the girls set goals and went after them,” North girls coach Betsy Davis said. “It was a good meet for us and now we will look forward to the conference meet next week.”

In the 100 hurdles, Taryn Owens had a winning time of :16.19 with South’s Nicole Dougherty second in :16.35. North’s Kendra Fasbinder had a stumble in the race, but she came back strong in the 300 hurdles to post a winning time of :50.53. Owens was second in :51.97. North’s April Fruchnicht was third in :55.38.

Hayden won her second event of the night by taking the 200 in :27.28. Cunningham took second in :28.32 and Fasbinder was third in :29.19.

An exciting 800 race was won by Greensburg’s Brianna Parsons. She was joined by North’s Wenning and Lady Pirate teammates Ann Weigel and Val Hagerty in a finish separated by just four seconds. Parsons took first in 2:45 followed by Wenning in 2:46, Weigel in 2:47 and Hagerty in 2:48.

Greensburg’s Veronica Tuley won the 1600 in 6:12 and the 3200 in 13:28. In the 1600, Hagerty took second (6:13) with North’s Meredith Tarplee third (6:18). In the 3200, Greensburg’s Gina Ricke was second (14:14) and Tarplee was third (15:26).

Greensburg’s 3200 relay team of Owens, Weigel, Hagerty and Parson won in 11:04.5. The Lady Pirates 1600 relay team of Parsons, Reed, Hagerty and Owens took first in 4:38. North’s 400 relay team of Fruchtnicht, Fasbinder, Hayden and Wenning won in :52.84.

Greensburg’s Erica Schwering won the discus at 105 with Greensburg’s Sabrina Smiley second (99-0) and
Mollye Leas third (97-3).

In the shot put, Greensburg’s
Leas won at 33-1 with Schwering second at 32-7 and Smiley third at 30-4.

The long jump title went to North’s Fruchtnicht with a leap of 15-0.25. North’s Hayden was second (14-9) with South’s Allison Cunningham third (14-7).

South’s Julie French won the high jump at 4-10. Greensburg’s Tawna Chauncy was second at 4-8 and North’s Tarplee third at 4-8.

For the boys, South’s Krisjo Brown won the 110 hurdles in :15.99 and the 300 hurdles in :45.16. In the 110 hurdles, Greensburg’s Dougan was second in :17.78 and teammate Craig Schwipps was third in :18.87. In the 300 hurdles, South’s Tyler Mote was second in :46.91 and Greensburg’s Schwipps took third in :48.19.

South’s Jeremy Ponsler won the 100 (:11.38) and the 400 (:55.09). He was followed in the 100 by North’s Tanner Derflinger (:11.68) and South’ Johnson (:12.1). In the 400, Greensburg’s Cory Koors was second in :57.81 and North’s Stephen Speer was third in :59.34.

North’s Dustin Metz won the 200 with a time of :24.41. Greensburg’s Colton Black finished second (:24.5) and North’s Derflinger was third (:24.6).

Greensburg’s Landon Wenning won both the 1600 (4:57) and the 800 (2:13). In the 1600, two Pirates followed with Powell second (5:00) and Curtis Nieman third (5:10). In the 800, Powell was second (2:14) and South’s Daniel Skinner took third (2:22).

South’s Curtis Johnson won the discus at 136-1 with Greensburg’s Myers third (128-1) and South's Evan Umbright third (123-11).

In the shot put, Greensburg’s Will Senefield took first (431.5) with Greensburg’s Elijah Harter second (42-7) and North’s Speer third (41-3.5).

Greensburg’s Matt Novak won the long jump with a leap of 19-6. South’s Mote was second (17-7) and North’s Eric Lusk was third (16-8.5).

Matt Little of Greensburg cleared the high jump bar at 5-10 to earn the county title. Pirates Koors (5-6) and Novak (5-4) were second and third respectively.

Nieman came back to run a strong 3200 and win in 11:35. South’s Nathan Franke was second in 11:57 an Greensburg’s Rick Wininger took third in 12:07.

Greensburg’s 3200 relay team of Jesse Herbert, Nieman, Powell and Wenning won in 9:53. The Pirates 1600 relay team of Powell, Black, Wenning and Novak won in 3:32. South’s 400 relay team of Mote, C. Johnson, Wesseler and J. Johnson won in :46.38.
