Lady Warriors run to regional championship

The top girls from the Greensburg, North and South Decatur track teams were on display in Shelbyville Tuesday at the regional meet, but none of the girls was able to qualify for the state meet in Bloomington.

North’s Hillary Wenning came the closest, finishing fourth in the 800 at 2:18.26, just missing the top-three spot needed to qualify for state by three-hundreths of a second. North’s Kendra Fasbinder finished fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of :15.59 and 11th in the 300 hurdles at :50.03, while North freshman Hayley Hayden was eighth in the 100 at :12.79 and sixth in the 200 at :26.89. Elizabeth Frye also finished 14th in the discus with a distance of 92-7.5.

For the Lady Pirates, sophomore Taryn Owens was 11th in the 100 hurdles at :16.54 and 12th in the 300 hurdles at :50.05. Fellow sophomore Shelbi Reed took 12th in the 400 at 1:05.42. And Greensburg’s throwing tandem of Erica Schwering and Mollye Leas also both placed in both throwing events. Schwering was seventh in the shot put at 34-6.5 and ninth in the discus at 107-5, while Leas was 10th in the shot put at 32-8.5 and eighth in the discus at 108-11.5.

The Lady Cougars lone representative at regionals was sophomore Allison Cunningham, who claimed 12th in the 100 at :13.42.

In the relays, North’s 400 relay team of Fasbinder, Wenning, Hayden and April Fruchtnicht finished eighth with a time of :52.23. Greensburg’s 1600 relay team of Owens, Reed, Ann Weigel and Brianna Parsons finished 14th at 4:27.80, while the Lady Pirate 3200 relay team of Weigel, Parsons, Valerie Hagerty and Veronica Tuley was also 14th with a time of 10:48.78.

In the overall team scores, Warren Central was crowned regional champion with a score of 117. Center Grove took second at 79 and Franklin Central third at 65.5.

North finished 14th overall with a score of 14, while Greensburg placed 26th at 3.

After the meet, North coach Betsy Davis said she was very happy with how her team performed.

“I thought they performed excellent,” Davis said. “What I like seeing is that when we come into a very competitive regional, my girls can rise to the occasion.”

The final girls track meet of the season will be the state meet, which takes place Saturday, June 2 in Bloomington.
