First Sergeant Mark A. Carunchia, 52, was appointed on August 19, 1979 as a graduate of the 37th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy. Before joining the Department, Carunchia was a 1975 graduate of East Noble High School in Kendallville. He then attended Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan before transferring to Indiana University in Bloomington. Upon his appointment as a Trooper, Carunchia was assigned to the Ligonier Post where he patrolled DeKalb County until 1988 when he became a Detective and continued his investigative work in DeKalb County. In 1993, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was the immediate supervisor for the Detectives assigned to the Fort Wayne Post. In 1999, he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and assumed the duties of the District Investigative Coordinator, the position which he still holds today. During his career, Carunchia was a technical accident investigator, has attended numerous investigative schools and is a member of the Department's "Possible Club" for firearms proficiency. He and his wife, Linda, have two children, Katie and Travis and they live in rural Garrett. 2
