Ashley - Thelma B. Leas, 83, of rural Ashley died at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at Laurels of Butler in Butler.

Mrs. Leas was a homemaker and Bible scholar. She had worked at the Ashley canning factory, Green Parrot restaurant in Waterloo, White's Supermarket in Auburn and was a pie chef at Lincoln Life in Fort Wayne.

She was born Nov. 25, 1917, in Fairfield Township, Dekalb County, to Orville and Elizabeth (Conrad) Westbrook. Her husband, Eugene Leas, died in 1986.

Mrs. Leas was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Ashley, the St. John's Ladies Guild, The Jolly James, the Symposium Club, Fairfield Friendship Club and the Fairfield Home Extension Club.

Surviving are three sons, Norman Leas of Fort Wayne, David Leas of Greensburg and Mark Leas of Dothan, Ala., four daughters, Carole Wilhelm of Waterloo, Linda Snider of Hicksville, Ohio, Sandra Shuman of Ashley and Kathy Hamm of Alexandria, 17 grandchildren, Kim and Terry Nusbaum, Kris and Roxanne Myers, Kirk Myers, Tim and Jackie Snider, Rachel Wenman, Matt and Jennifer Snider, Elizabeth and Paul Evans, Amy and Mike Douglas, Michelle and Henry Olquin, Greg Shuman, Brian Shuman, Jeremy Shuman, Mary and Dan Whetstine, Tony Caranchia, Warren Leas, Mollye Leas and Stephanie Leas, three step grandchildren, Herschel and Sue Wilhelm, Tom and Teresa Wilhelm and Jeff and Tracy Wilhelm, 14 great-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were a brother, Glenn Westbrook, two grandchildren, Jeff Shuman and Lana Leas, two step-sisters and a step-brother.

Services will be a 11 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ with the Rev. John Kabes officiating.

Calling is 3-8 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home in Hudson and one hour before services at the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, a brother, a stepbrother and two stepsisters.

Burial is at Circle Cemetery, Hudson. Memorials are to St. John's United Church of Christ.
