Mary Rachel Crow was the youngest daughter of Samuel Jackson Crow and Elisabeth Leas. Her parents were married 27 Sep 1855 in Cadiz, Harrison County, Ohio and she was born a few years later.
Her family then moved to Brown County, Indiana, where her next four siblings were born. Francis O(Frank)Crow, Altazana Crow, Robert John Crow and George Seymour Crowe.
Then moving to Allamakee County, Iowa, her mother gave birth to her remaining three brothers, Samuel L Crow, James Blackburn Crowe and William Breem Crow. Her mother Elisabeth dying ten short years later (in 1876) after they reached their home in Iowa.
On 25 Dec 1873, she married John Taylor Steele, son of David B and Elisabeth Ralston Steele. They were then blessed with five children. Wilber T, Meta E, Effie May, Meryl Jacob and Doris Irene Steele.
Mary and John were married for 52 years, 3 months and 6 days, when he died suddenly on 31 Mar 1926, of an ongoing heart ailment.
Mary died at age 87 years, 7 months and 18 days and is buried next to her husband at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon.
