Thanks Don. I will be happy to provide then any information they need. I also have photos of his grave if you or anyone is interested. That was quite a meteoric rise he had from private to captain in little over a year.

Hi, I have been following the exchanges about the Cemeteries in Morgan County. Jef wanted to know who to contact for help in restoration or repair. In the last exchange there was mention of a Monument for a Civil War Captain. William J Leas , Residence: Worthington, Indiana Enlistment Date: 20 September 1861 Side Served: Union State Served: Indiana Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 20 September 1861 Enlisted in Company F, 31st Infantry Regiment Indiana on 20 September 1861. Promoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on 26 April 1862 effective 26 April 1862 Promoted to Full Lieutenant 1st Class on 13 July 1862 effective 13 July 1862 Promoted to Full Captain on 11 February 1863 effective 18 February 1863 Killed Company F, 31st Infantry Regiment Indiana on 19 September 1863 in Chickamauga, GA
There was a pension filed in April of 1864 by his wife Catherine and again on behalf of his daughter Catherine C Beck. They may be amongst the other stone remenants there. I contacted the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) Department of Indiana, Graves Registration officer, J. Alan Teller, PDC (alan.teller@insightbb.com), and Civil War Monuments Officer Phillip D. McClure (philjudy@bcremc.net), by email to advise them of this cemetery, monument, and gravesite of a Union Veteran. They or someone from that organization may contact you. I hope this helps.
