THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, BLOOMFIELD, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, March 30, 1916, Volume XXXIX, Number 20, Page 5, Column 1, OBITUARY. Beck.[Transcribed on September 2, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]

Catherine C., daughter of Tobias and Sallie (GOSS) BUTLER, was born November 19, 1832, in Morgan County, Indiana. At the age of seven her mother died, leaving her to the care of her father, when she and an older sister assisted him in the cares of the home. She bore the duties that fell to her in an earnest way for one so young.

She was married to William J. LEAS, February 15, 1851, and removed to Worthington. To this union were born four children, Tobias B., who died in early childhood; Mrs. Sarah DIXON, Mrs. Elizabeth CONDER and Mrs. Lelia FULLER.

Mr. LEAS and answered the call to serve his country in the Civil War and was promoted to captain. He was faithful to his duty and fell on a Georgia battlefield to rise no more, leaving the wife a widow and his little girls a soldier's orphans.

She was married to James BECK, October 1, 1865, another of the country's defenders. To this marriage were born three sons, William James, Charles C., who departed this life at the age of about thirteen years, and Avery, who with the husband and the three sisters, are left to mourn the loss of wife and mother. Besides these there are twenty-seven grandchildren, forty-six great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one brother and many other relatives and friends.

In early life she united with the Baptist church and later with her husband, Mr. BECK, joined the Methodist church. In her late years she was deprived of church privileges to a great extent.

On March 24, 1916, she peacefully passed from the scenes of her earthly pilgrimage at the age of eighty-three years, three months and five days.

The husband loses a loving helpmate, the children a devoted mother, and the community a good neighbor.

He will be greatly missed by all, but our loss is her gain. Her life's work is ended, but her good lessons will go on, and she has entered into the rest prepared for her from the foundation of the world.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our friends and neighbors, who so kindly assisted us in the sickness and death of our dear wife and mother.
