Obituary in the Astoria Argus - August 18, 1892

Died in Lewistown August 7, with ulcer of the stomach, Daniel Lease, age seventy-five years.

He came to this county in 1847 and was a merchant tailor in Bernadotte twenty-five years. He married Miss Sparks of Schuyler County in 1840 and settled in Bernadotte in that year. Four children were born to them, all of whom are living.

Daniel was an eccentric character and by economy and industry had accumulated considerable property. He had been a member of the M.E. Church for 40 years. He was a faithful husband, a kind father and a true friend. The needy was never turned away from his door.

The remains were buried in Lewistown.

TRANSCRIPTION OF LAST WILL and TESTAMENT OF DANIEL LEAS

I, Daniel Leas of the County of Preble and State of Ohio, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and following to-wit:

First it is my will that my funeral expenses and all my just debt be fully paid.

Secondly I hereby give, devise and bequeath to my beloved Wife Elizabeth Leas in lieu of dower the house and all the lots occupied by the ____ lying and being in the town of Lewisburgh in said County during her natural life, with all the __ household and kitchen furniture and other articles not particularly named and otherwise disposed of in this will during her natural life as aforesaid.

And furthermore it is my will that my said wife shall have the entire control of the renting of my farm lying near the said town of Lewisburgh and that she receive and dispose of said rents for her support and comfort during her natural life as aforesaid.

And furthermore after the death of my said wife it is my will that the children of my daughter Susan have one hundred dollars divided among them equally -- and also one hundred dollars to be divided equally among the offspring of my daughter Sarah and one hundred dollars to the offspring of my son Thompson.

And furthermore I direct that after the death of my said wife, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Rebecca the house and lots on which I now reside together with all my real estate, Within the said town of Lewisburg and lying west of what is now called ___h Street that she have and hold the same for her self and her heirs forever.

And furthermore it is my will that after the death of my said wife that all the residue of my estate not having before disposed of to be equally divided among my children now living my daughter Rebecca included.

And lastly I hereby constitute and appoint my said wife Elizabeth Leas and my son Frances M. Leas to be my executors of this my last will and testament. Hereby revoking and annulling all former wills by me made and ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have set my hand and seal this 14th day of March A.D. 1856

I, Elizabeth Leas Widow of Daniel Leas late of Preble County deceased do hereby relinquish my right to take letters testamentary of the last will and testament of said Daniel Leas deceased and do hereby refuse to accept said trust as one of the Executors of said Will.

A sale of the household, farm and other non-real estate assets of the late Daniel Leas is held on August 13, 1856 in Lewisburgh, OH. Some of the buyers are: William, Rebecca and Robert Leas; also E.C. McGillcrest, Henry Staub, Abra. Singer, Vincent Homan, Wash. Ozias, George Rouff, Wm.Kelly, Thomas Whalen, D.E. Stephens, Eliz.Kerper.

Note: in the final distribution of assets of the estate of Daniel Leas, the following heirs are listed:

William Leas Rebecca Leas Robert Leas John W. Leas Jesse E. Leas George Leas Daniel Leas Elizabeth Leas Hizer Frances W. Leas

Daniel Leas's children deceased as of 1860 are Susanne, b 1804; Sarah b 1808; and Thomson, b 1813 d 1845.

------------------------------------- Daniel Leas's widow Elizabeth is not listed as dying in 1856. Francis M. Leas, executor, submits vouchers for final distribution of the estate assets on May 3, 1860. (More search is still going on.)
