He was elected Sheriff of DeKalb County, Indiana in 1878 as a Republican.

Biography of Augustus S. Leas, pages 16/49, Atlas of DeKalb County, Indiana, J. H. Beers & Co., Chicago, Ill., 1880.

Augustus S. Leas, Sheriff. He was born in Stark County, Ohio, August 31, 1833. In 1837, he removed with his parents to Guernsey County in the same State, where they resided until 1852, when they removed to DeKalb County, Ind., when they settled upon a farm in Smithfield Township, where he remained engaged in farming until the summer of 1854, when he removed to the town of Auburn, and entered into the employment of Samuel Sanders, one of the first and largest dealers in dry goods in the county, where he remained about three years, during which time he was married to Nancy H. Ford, and engaged in farming on the Ford farm, which occupation, together with that of a dealer in live stock, he followed until 1864. In 1865, he removed to Waterloo, in said county, and engaged in the dry-goods and livery business and was also a dealer in live stock until 1870, since which time, until 1878, he devoted his whole time and attention to the livery and stock business. In 1878, he was elected Sheriff of DeKalb County, which position of trust and confidence he is filing with honesty and capability. Few county officials stand higher in the estimation of DeKalb’s citizens that Mr. Leas, being at all times courteous and attentive in the discharge of his duties. He is a man of enterprise and public spirit, and has always striven to do his share toward helping everything calculated to benefit the county of which he is a worthy citizen.
