Regional Leadership Lab Brings Counties Together

November 11, 2006 - Greensburg Daily News

GREENSBURG - Representatives from the 12 counties of Dearborn, Decatur, Fayette, Franklin, Jefferson, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, Rush, Scott, Switzerland, and Union are participating in a third regional Leadership Learning Lab sponsored by the Southeastern Indiana Rural Regional Partnership.

Decatur County participants in the lab are: Jill Clift, ETC., Valorie Moorman, Purdue School of Technology, Mallory Sanchez, MainSource Insurance, Bryan Robbins, Heart of the Tree City, Josh Wolford, First Christian Church,
Mollye Leas, Greensburg High School, and Hanna Barnes-Israel, Greensburg High School.

The Leadership Learning Lab and the Partnership were formed through a grant to River Valley Resources, Inc. from the Indiana Rural Development Council. The grant challenge is to develop "social capital," that is, new leaders, in southeastern Indiana.

According to Pat Van Selow, Director of Research and Program Development for River Valley Resources, states "This is a conceptual process, not a project, which allows for breathing space to be positive and creative. We apply a discipline of positive change which allows one to think and talk about the values and strengths in our rural communities. We honor what we have and build on that."

The grant opportunity has brought together partners from economic development, education, elected officials, private business, and community organizations. The participants in the leadership lab process have ranged in age from 16 to 69 with high school students exchanging viewpoints with seasoned professionals.

The lab participants attend four full day seminars followed by smaller group sessions with related assignments. They concentrate on the similarities, common values, and strengths of all of their communities and explore how they can address issues and develop solutions on a regional level.

Two cycles of participants have already been exposed to experts in leadership development including economic development consultant, Ed Morrison, from Case Western University in Cleveland; Dr Jeff Miller, professor at the University of Indianapolis who presented at the UN Conference for Engaging Communities; Chuck Fluharty, director of the Rural Policy Research Institute; Nathan Harter, Assoc Professor at the Purdue School of Technology; and Annie Hernandez with Trustee Leadership Development in Indianapolis.

Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman is scheduled to visit southeastern Indiana later this fall for a "community conversation" with the participants of the regional leadership labs.

March 4, 2006 - Taylor University NSR Qualifier "The NSR Classic is Indiana's highest caliber high school indoor meet". - At this high school track meet, I represented Greensburg High School in the Shot Put event.    Considering this was the very first track meet of the season and considering that the official "practice sessions" had not yet started, I did really good at this meet.  In my group, which consisted of smaller schools (1A, 2A and 3A schools), I finished in 6th place.  This was out of 20 teams.  I threw 30' 10".  This was one foot, five inches farther than the 7th place competitor.  I am looking forward to a fun Track and Field season.
